Description: On July 25th, 2020, The MV WAKASHIO ploughed into the coral reefs off the island nation of Mauritius and began leaking oil into the Indian Ocean. As a result of both the spill and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, many Mauritians were jobless and directly defied government orders by beginning to clean the coastline themselves in order to survive financially and save their ocean. The oil spill occurred near popular tourist beaches but also near two environmentally protected areas, endangering coral and marine life. The spill poses great economic and ecological implications for the island, and many fear it will take decades to recover.
